About the Project

This exciting Masters project has been developed to better understand professional ballet dancers’ mental health, and how this can best be supported through early detection, referral, and timely intervention. Although dancing can be an important source of well-being, reports from the dance sector show dancers may experience rates of mental illness and health-harming behaviours at similar or elevated levels to that of the general population. The findings of this research will help to inform the implementation of a well-being strategy for professional dancers.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain unique insights and access to behind the scenes of one of the world’s preeminent dance companies. Spending time immersed in the BRB as part of field work will enable the student to understand what is involved in staging world-renowned ballet and the realities of working life in a professional company.

Having experience in dance as well as the personal skills to navigate in such a setting will be necessary. The successful candidate will use a mixture of methods to collect their data, including both quantitative and qualitative approaches, and will also gain experience in disseminating their findings to both academic and non-academic audiences.

Supervisors:

Prof Jennifer Cumming and Dr Mary Quinton (School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Birmingham)
